Doubletop Mountain is located in the Bear River range of Northern Utah and Southeastern Idaho. It is the second highest peak in the range, but is the most remote and one of the most rugged. It has a dramatic profile when seen from the west because it juts out higher than the rest of the ridge. The best view is from Preston, Idaho. Doubletop gets its name because it has a deep cleft running right through the center of it. The cleft is named Pika Boulevard after the little rodents that live there. The south summit is the highest of the two. Doubletop Is extreemly steep and rocky on all sides. There is a trail marked on the map, but it has long since vanished. It can be approached from all sides, but some are more difficult than others. The best route to the top is from the East in steep hollow. near the summit is a maze of broken, loose, and sharp rock. It is necessary to pick your way through this from every direction except the south. There is actually a third small summit to the east of the main two, but it is not visible until you're almost at it. The west face is a solid line of cliffs that drop for hundreds of feet. The view from the top is extraordinary, and on clear days it is possible to see the Tetons to the north and the Unintas to the south.
