Hotakadake is the general name given to a group offive distinct peaks that rise nearly 1700 m abovethe valley floor at Kamikochi. The centerpieceOkuhotakadake rises to 3190 m making it Japan'sthird tallest mountain. Okuhotakadake is surroundedby four additional peaks. Nishihotakadake to thesouthwest is the shortest at 2909 m, Maehotakadaketo the southeast is next at 3090 m followed byKarasawadake (3110 m) and Kitahotakadake (3106 m)to the north. Routes to Okuhotakadake require somescrambling at the higher elevations along exposedridges that drop off steeply several hundreds ofmeters in places. Because of easy access, Hotakadakereceives significant traffic annually. Thecombination of heavy traffic and potentiallyhazardous routes, especially in inclement weather, has resulted in a number of fatalities over theyears, making Hotakadake one of the deadliestmountains in all of Japan. However, with properattention paid to the trail, problems are easilyavoided and the climber is rewarded with amagnificent 360 degree panorama from the summitplus the satisfaction of summiting one of Japan'sgreatest mountains.(see also the entry for Oku Hotakadake on Peakware)
