Scramble
Of all the mountains running along the most eastern chain of peaks in the North Alps, Jonen is the most prominent. Standing higher than the others, Jonen Dake is a symbol of Azumino. The climb to the summit takes a few hours and includes and pleasant but sometimes steep walk up through a forest, a scramble up large boulders, a bit of a struggle along a trail of loose rocks and stubborn dwarf pine to the refuge, and a steep climb up the trail to the top. Views from the mountain chain ridge over to the Hotakas and Yarigatake are spectacular. From Jonen trails lead south to Chogatake and north over Yokotsu Dake to Otensho Dake and Tsubakuro Dake. Jonen Dake is one of Japan's Hyaku Meisan - 100 Famous Mountains.
