Mount Aragats is a massive, isolated stratovolcano located in Armenia and is the highest peak in the country. It is renowned for its unique crater and four distinct summits, which form a nearly circular ridge around the deep volcanic crater. Each summit has its own characteristics: North Summit (4,090 meters / 13,419 feet): The highest of the four, it is steep and rugged, offering the most challenging climb. The ascent often requires technical skills and gear, especially in winter or early spring. From the North Summit, climbers are rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the Aragats crater, the surrounding valleys, and on clear days, even Mount Ararat. South Summit (3,879 meters / 12,729 feet): The easiest to access, the South Summit is a popular choice for hikers due to its relatively straightforward ascent. It is often used as an entry point to explore the rest of the mountain. East Summit (3,908 meters / 12,822 feet): Known for its dramatic cliffs and sweeping views, the East Summit is slightly more challenging than the South Summit but still accessible to most climbers with moderate experience. West Summit (3,995 meters / 13,107 feet): The second-highest peak, the West Summit offers a balanced mix of difficulty and accessibility, attracting both experienced climbers and avid hikers. The volcanic crater at the center of Aragats is vast and dramatic, with sharp ridges and snowfields that persist year-round. The mountain is a favorite destination for adventurers, photographers, and scientists due to its unique geology, biodiversity, and historical significance. Lake Kari, a glacial lake at 3,190 meters, serves as a popular base camp for climbers and is known for its stunning scenery.
