Please note this area can be very dangerous when the mist comes down (which can happen very frequently). The OS Map (or equivalent) should be a necessity and not a bonus. The plateau is largely featureless and it is easy to lose sight of the cairns. As this website will no doubt tell you the windchill at this height can be significant so ensure you have adequate clothing as well as the essential map and compass.
Despite that, there are stunning views to be enjoyed, just be aware that the weather can change quickly and be properly equipped. It is very easy to get lost in what is essentially an arctic environment even in midsummer.

We are not expert walkers but decided to give the mountain a go. Check with the ski centre rangers (very helpful) whether they think the weather is a threat. The OS map was a bonus to distinguish which paths to follow. No difficult navigation required. Took us just over 6hrs to complete the round trip at a steady stroll. A wide variety of terrain encountered. In the upper half of the walk where the path is not clear there are loads of cairns to follow. They will guide you all the way to the top across the boulder fields. Fantastic scenery. A challenging walk but not too difficult. Well worth the effort.
