Culver Down (Isle of Wight) Climbing Notes
mark francis from UNITED KINGDOM writes:
Part of the IOW coastal path, you can approach from either Bembridge or Sandown or access by road.
On the top is Bembridge Fort and a WW2 coastal gun battery. There is also an obelisk commemorating the Earl of Yarborough and an ice cream kiosk as well as a row of former coastguard cottages.
There is also a pub called the Culver Haven which does food.
There are kestrels & possibly breeding peregrines.
Culver Down was the site of a skirmish with French invaders in 1546 who fought their way into Sandown & were defeated on the beach. The sandstone of Redcliff is a major fossil bearing site, resulting in the discovery of holotype fossils such as Yaverlandii and the pterosaur Caulkicephalus. You will see the Dinosaur Museum on the seafront by the canoe lake.
You may also see adders and weasels (unless they are stoats?)
