Be patience. No need to rush. Maintain your heart rate at the level you are most comfortable.
Stop as you need to. Replenish water as much as you need. Eat and munch from time to time along the hike. Hire a porter or a mountain guide (both can be the same person) to be with you all the time is the best choice if you are moderately fit (cannot run up and down the mountain type).
Waterproof jacket and pants are important. Keep yourself as warm as possible. Don't underestimate the temperature. No heroic actions or ego needed, make sure you can reach to the summit is not only your physical condition (train for it no joke) but also your mental condition at that point. Turning back when you need to is not a shameful decision. It is a live or death decision. So turn back when you know you cannot. (Very costly when porters need to bring you down. Can reach to RM16-20K depending on your weight and condition.
Train hard. Don't forget to train your arms too. To reach the peak, a lot of robe climbing needed which need much arm strength.
Whatsoever, please stay safe and be wise to turn back whenever and wherever you are. Your life is more important than summiting.

Essentials:
1. Walking stick (never to underestimate its usefulness, regardless of your fitness level)
2. Long johns. Very helpful to have them around when the wind started to howl at 30-40km/hr up there followed by gushing rains.
3. If possible, avoid other accommodations than Laban Rata. We bunked at Waras Hut, but the bad weather made us to be not-so-waras when it got extremely cold (waras = sane).
4. Consume lots of honey prior to your climb to warmth your body.
5. If u use a porter's service, be close to them. Waited almost 3 hours in wet clothing for my porter to arrive, since he was also our sweeper.
6. Get the patch body warmer sold in stores. It helps. buy lots of it. Your friends will thank you for this.
7. Waterproof pants, jackets, gloves. Important!
